Being a scene kid is kind of like being in Fight Club: the first rule of being a scene kid is that you don't talk about being a scene kid. Discussing the killer Paramour show you saw last weekend is okay; talking about the three hours you later spent bleaching and dying your hair out to match the lead singer's is not, unless you make a video tutorial of said dying process and post it on YouTube. Standing in front of the mirror perfecting the waxhair ratio for that effortlessly messy look is fine, just don't let anyone know about it.
Getting Involved
* First and foremost, go to shows. Lots of them. LMFAO and Brokencyde are two hugely popular scene bands, but don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and flirt with happy hardcore, emo and indie dance too. Seeing and being seen is what drives this movement, so round up your friends the next time Rise Against comes to town.
* Self-expression and individual identity are a big part of this trend. Piercings and tattoos are a huge conversation starter and should reflect your personal interests. Just be mindful that the Monroe piercing you think is so awesome today may not be so great five years from now. Same thing for tattoos; that killer hello Kitty wrist ink may hinder your professional job search later on in life. Hair is fair game since it grows out so fast. Experiment with asymmetrical cuts, choppy bangs and accessories like headbands and bows.
